On January 20, 2025, Purple Mountains™ will release a collaboration song, On a Mountain Climb, by talented young artists from five high schools across America—from Hawaii to Philadelphia. The recording artists are tasked with producing a revolutionary song that is undeterred by current setbacks in the United States and promotes a remixed culture of belonging heading into 2025, forty years after the release of Prince's America. This ambitious project will also include cover art featuring past work by a Minneapolis visual artist depicting MLK Day ten years prior to the song's release date. Start climbing together!
America
by Prince and the Revolution
...ON A MOUNTAIN CLIMB. "America" is a sardonic attack on the mid-1980s United States, referencing Communism, and worrying about nuclear war, a common theme in Prince's lyrics in the 1980s. This 10-minute live video was shot on October 27, 1985 during a "One Off" performance in Nice, France at Théâtre de Verdure.
